The primary data source for this report was the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. Between 1984 and 1992, 28 police officers have been killed in the line of duty in Missouri. Over 60 percent of these officers were killed by felonious acts, while the remaining 40 percent were killed as a result of accidents or negligence. During 1993, 2,016 officers were assaulted; 21 percent of these assaults resulted in an injury to the officer. In 78 percent of these cases, the assailant used physical force, while a weapon was used in 22 percent of the cases. An estimated 14,658 persons were employed by Missouri law enforcement agencies in 1993, of whom 71 percent were sworn officers and 29 percent were civilians. There was a ratio of 2 sworn officers to every 1,000 State residents during the reporting period. 6 figures and 20 tables
