This report describes legal aid services in Canada for the fiscal year 1993-1994.
Abstract
Legal aid revenues were over $590 million during the reporting period, of which the government paid 91 percent, and the remainder was paid through client contributions, cost recoveries, publication sales, interest income, and provincial grants. Legal aid plan expenditures in 1993-1994 totaled $594 million, a decrease of 1 percent from the previous year. During the year, 1.1 million written applications for legal aid services were received, representing a decrease of 4 percent from the previous year. Sixty- six percent of these applications were approved for legal aid certificates. In 1993-1994, there were 2,903 legal aid employees, an increase of 6 percent over 1992-1993 staffing levels. Twenty- seven percent of active lawyers in Canada provided legal aid services during the reporting period, for which legal aid paid $397 million, representing 67 percent of total expenditures. 17 tables and 8 figures
