Groups of approximately 12 directors of juvenile corrections systems gather three times yearly to interact around policy, practice, and management issues central to juvenile corrections. This session summary highlights their discussion on boot camps. The directors found that their concerns regarding the proliferation of juvenile boot camps could be addressed most effectively by learning about best practices. Those directors who initially had strong biases against boot camps began to appreciate the potential of the military academy model following this session. All participants agreed that careful evaluation of juvenile boot camps is necessary, as is a strong, well-connected aftercare component. The session summary ends with a list of recommended characteristics of boot camp programs.
