This report presents statistics and trends in police personnel and expenditures in Canada in 1993 and previous years.
Abstract
Total police personnel declined marginally (0.3 percent) to 76,368 in 1993. Of these, three-fourths were police officers and one-fourth were other personnel. The five largest police forces in Canada account for 61 percent of all police officers. These are the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Metro Toronto, Surete du Quebec, Montreal Urban Community, and Ontario Provincial Police. In 1993, the country had one police officer for every 509 Canadians, the highest ratio since 1986 and the second consecutive annual increase. The lowest ratio was in Quebec (1 to 491), while the highest ratios were in Prince Edward island (1 to 690) and Newfoundland (1 to 669). The numbers of females continued to increase as a proportion of police personnel, amounting to 8 percent of police officers and 66 percent of civilians. Tables
