The first section reprints the pamphlet that the FBI's Office of Public Affairs prepared to assist prospective researchers who intend to use the Freedom of Information Act to obtain relevant FBI records. In this pamphlet, FBI historians survey the history of the FBI and then describe how FBI records are created, classified, and are to be cited; identify the FBI files that have already been released and that can thus be researched at the FBI Reading Room; and provide the addresses of FBI Headquarters and the various field offices needed for requesters to obtain FBI records and the addresses of the various presidential libraries and other depositories that contain FBI records. The pamphlet also contains a reprint of the text of the Freedom of Information Act. The second section lists the various FBI files that are currently available on microfilm and those printed government publications that contain information which has direct or indirect relevance to research projects of the FBI. The last section, the annotated bibliography of relevant books and articles, was compiled through a computerized search of publications listed under the categories of FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, or Federal surveillance. Subject index
