Abstract
Advice provided in this booklet is based in the belief that children must learn to be responsible for their actions. Going to school each week day must become one of their early responsibilities, and they must take responsibility for their own learning. With patience, perseverance, and lots of loving encouragement, parents can help their children succeed in school and beyond by developing a home environment that is conducive to learning. Parents' general school-related responsibilities are to establish daily routines, pay attention to school matters, participate in reading activities, monitor television, and get involved with homework. Suggestions are also offered for parents in developing their children's positive attitudes toward learning and school. Factors that motivate children to become truant or drop out of school are identified, and guidelines are provided for parents and schools in addressing these factors. Additional resources are listed.
