These guidelines supplied to inmates in Danish prisons provide a short description of the most important rules for serving custodial sentences in Denmark and the general conditions of imprisonment.
Abstract
The booklet first describes the difference between an "open" and "closed" prison, and the circumstances that may arise in an inmate's being transferred from an open to a closed prison or vice versa. Information on the custodial sentence calculation notes that inmates will be informed about the important dates and times of their custodial sentences. Other information pertains to association with other inmates; personal, social, and legal assistance; property and money issued and allowed to inmates; food/drink; and religious services and rights. Work or education is mandatory for each inmate. Work or sickness (in the event an inmate is unable to work) money is given to inmates. Work and educational possibilities vary from institution to institution. Guidelines are also provided on free time; sickness; dentistry; visits; telephone; letters; elections (voting rights while in prison); spokesman scheme; inmate leaves; release on parole; rules, requirements, and prohibitions; search; discipline; use of force; and appeals. A special section presents guidelines that apply specifically to foreign inmates.
