This 1993/94 Annual Report of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services explains the agency statutory authority, purpose, goals, and activities, followed by statistical data.
Abstract
The Department of Correctional Services' statutory purpose is to provide for the custody, study, care, discipline, training, and treatment of persons in correctional institutions, and to supervise persons committed to the Department on parole, as well as develop policies and programs for the correctional treatment and rehabilitation of those persons committed to it. All facilities and programs have been accredited and have continued to work toward maintenance of compliance levels throughout the 3- year accreditation award period. The current accreditation status for each facility and program is presented in the report. The recidivism rate is the number of convictions for new crimes divided by the number of releases. The numbers for fiscal year 1994 reflect a 20.3 percent overall recidivism rate for both males and females. Information is provided on legal services; personnel management; staff training; planning, research, and accreditation; and security coordination. Data show recidivism data by fiscal year from 1982 through 1991, the average monthly institutional population, the total incarcerated population by fiscal year, and incarcerated population versus design capacity.
