This report presents statistics on the numbers of adults on probation and parole in Canada during 1993-94, noting that 79 percent of the offenders for the year were under supervision in the community and 21 percent were incarcerated.
Abstract
Sixty-six percent of the 154,000 offenders were on probation and 12 percent were released into the community under various forms of conditional release. The average monthly count of adults on probation increased 2 percent from the previous year and 40 percent from 1989-90. Women were just as likely to receive probation as a disposition as were men. Higher proportions of men were put on probation for violent offenses, whereas higher proportions of women were put on probation for property offenses. The median age of the probationers was 30 years in 1993-94, compared to 27 years in 1989-90. On the average, 9,928 persons were on full parole, 1,622 on day parole, and 2,195 on statutory release in 1993-94. Figures and tables
