The author presents a phenomenological analysis of the meaning of skinhead expressive activity for the skinheads themselves, with an emphasis on the anthropology of the city and social process. Some of the issues dealt with here include the meaning of visual and performance style for skinheads, interaction between skinheads and members of other youth subcultures, the significance of drinking, and the public and private representations skinheads make of their girlfriends. So-called memories, or the stories of past exploits that skinheads tell each other, help create the skinhead's categorical and personal identity. The book presents a model of the social processes which shape the creation and maintenance of this unique urban lifestyle, and which underlie the social groupings which characterize and constitute urban youth scenes.
