According to a survey of 700 cities and towns responding to a League of Cities questionnaire, school violence is increasing.
Abstract
Nearly 40 percent of the respondents said school violence had increased over the past 5 years and 40 percent said that neighborhood gangs were a significant factor in school violence. Forty-five percent of the respondents said that school violence had remained about the same over the past 5 years, and only 6 percent said the incidence of violence had declined. Seventy percent of the towns and cities reported that their local police departments patrolled and conducted other activities at schools as a violence prevention strategy. About 25 percent of the communities said they had experienced incidents leading to hospitalization or death in the past year. School violence occurs in suburban, rural, and urban areas. Schools also reported a more visible police presence at athletic events. Many school reported that the implementation of safety education programs, stressing intervention and prevention, had positively affected school violence.
