Directed to police personnel who will be taking part in oral assessment exercises for obtaining a promotion, this volume is intended to prepare for these assessment exercises or participation in an assessment center.
Abstract
The exercises simulate and evaluate a candidate's performance in situations common to certain positions in a police agency. Introductory guidelines emphasize that oral assessment exercises involve role players, resource persons, and assessors. Candidates are awarded points by assessors who must hear something that demonstrates positive performance and who can take away points if they hear something inappropriate. Therefore, candidates must find out as much as possible about the assessment exercises they will be taking and should study the appropriate sections of the book. Further guidelines explain dimensions as the crucial element in the scoring process; the principles of administration, supervision, and management in generic form; the most common forms of oral assessment exercises; and the importance of time management during an oral assessment exercise. The next section explains specific exercises related to the oral presentation, questions and answers, an oral interactive interview, fact finding, and leaderless group discussions. The final section presents practice exercises in each of these areas.
