This document describes existing programs, services, and protocols in Canada that deal with elder abuse. The data used here were obtained through questionnaires completed by groups and organizations who are involved in elder abuse issues as well as informal community groups and ethnocultural groups that may provide related programs and services.
Abstract
The results of the survey show that the response to elder abuse is growing across Canada, with 74 percent of programs provided at the community and municipal level. However, provincial, territorial, and Federal Government agencies are becoming increasingly involved. Elder abuse-specific activities can usually be categorized as time-limited projects, ongoing programs and services that deal with elder abuse on an ad hoc basis, and the use of protocols in institutions and communities to make assessments and referrals. Most groups deal with elder abuse as part of a broader-based approach to family violence. The most common activities among survey respondents were awareness raising, information sharing, and referrals. The chapters describe community-based programs and services, acute and long-term care facilities, law enforcement and legal resources, and government agencies that deal with elder abuse in each province and territory. 9 figures and 6 appendixes
