The total number of adult arrests during 1994 rose 10.2 percent over 1993, reaching the highest level ever reported. This is also the first annual increase in arrests since 1989, and the largest rise since 1982. The growth was concentrated in the downstate area, with New York City reporting an increase of almost 20 percent. Arrests for misdemeanor offenses increased at a greater rate than arrests for felony offenses. The largest increase occurred in arrests for low-level drug offenses and other misdemeanor quality-of-life type crimes. Felony indictments (including superior court informations - SCIs) dropped one percent between 1993 and 1994. Violent felony indictments decreased at a much greater rate then drug indictments. Long Island was the only economic region in the State to report an increase in indictments. There are figures on trends in adult arrests (1985-1994), and arrests and indictments by specific regions.
