This paper summarizes the role of the independent Specialist Support Unit (SSU), which has been established by the British Home Office to assist in training police in England and Wales to be more responsive to the needs of a multicultural, multiracial society.
Abstract
The overall function of the SSU continues to be that set by the Police Training Council in 1983, that is, to assist the police service in developing the community and race relations aspect of police training. Specifically, SSU provides advice and assistance in the development of community and race relations as an integral part of police training. It also trains police instructors at national, regional, and force levels in community and race relations. Further, SSU maintains a community/race relations training resource bank. Other SSU tasks are to facilitate input to police training from lay contributors, provide advice and assistance to individual forces on their training, and disseminate relevant information and research. This article also provides information on SSU staffing, the four- phases of the instructor training, and the SSU's cooperation with the Police Staff College and the Central Planning and Training Unit.
