According to the Family Court Act, fingerprinting of both adults and juveniles must be in accordance with legislative standards established by the DCJS, particularly with respect to fingerprint retention and destruction. Legislation has also been passed that governs firearm possession and disposal and that regulates recordkeeping on firearm sellers and purchasers. Executive law establishing the DCJS identifies functions, powers, and duties of the DCJS and also delineates duties of courts and police officers. Other legislation passed in New York deals with terminating criminal actions in favor of the accused, youthful offenders, the collection of statistics by correctional agencies, authorized access to criminal and public records, and criminal identification and information services.
