The central record division of the Michigan State Police is responsible for criminal identification and records. Michigan's Code of Criminal Procedure imposes requirements on courts, the arrest process, and judgment and sentencing. The Penal Code contains provisions on access to and destruction of public records and on information collection and dissemination by law enforcement agencies. The Freedom of Information Act incorporates provisions that affect public officers and employees and that concern the public's right to inspect and copy records. Regulations governing the Criminal Justice Data Center are described that focus on Michigan's Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN), access to and dissemination of law enforcement data, agencies that participate in the LEIN, criminal history record information, and record maintenance and retention.
