The first chapter discusses the legal basis of private security, notably self-defense as a justification for the use of force to protect oneself, another person, or property; and the statutory basis for commercial private security. The power of arrest on the part of private security officers is examined in terms of misdemeanor offenses, felony offenses, and special laws for merchants. Other broad topics covered by this book include the use of force to effect an arrest, search and seizure, and self- incrimination.
