Integrating multiple perspectives, this manual presents practical guidelines and techniques for preventing workplace violence.
Abstract
The guidelines use knowledge from the areas of human resources, security, forensic and organizational psychology, employment law, and others. It explains how to recognize the clues and conditions that suggest that violence is a possibility, understand the elements of a comprehensive violence prevention program, and use those components to ensure a safe and secure workplace. It also discusses how to assess and manage specific threats to assure the safety of employees, customers, and the public. The discussion notes that violence can be perpetrated by employees, intruders such as disgruntled former employees or spouses intending to commit domestic violence, hostile customers, or other third parties. It also points out that very few violent people have mental disorders and that people who have abused drugs or alcohol are much more likely to become violent than people with mental disorders.
