The data reported in this volume were extracted from survey questionnaires completed by correctional agencies from all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Correctional Service of Canada. Researchers made follow-up telephone calls to verify and gather additional information. Responses were tabulated and, where appropriate, averaged, compared with other subject categories or compared with data collected from prior research. The information is presented in narrative, tabular, and graphic formats.
