This bulletin presents the results from the third data collection for 1994, which covers all indictable cases completed in magistrates' courts in a single week in October. The bulletin also contains a more detailed analysis for indictable cases in 1994 as a whole, including presentation by offense group, charge or summons, types of proceedings, type of court remands, and area and type of court.
Abstract
Some of the main points disclosed by these statistics were: (1) In October 1994, the average time taken from date of the offense to completion of processing indictable cases through magistrates' courts was 128 days, 7 days more than in October 1993; (2) The largest part of the increase in average time to process indictable cases between October 1993 and October 1994 was in the first listing to completion stage of cases; (3) For those remanded in custody throughout proceedings, the average period from first listing to completion in 1994 as a whole was 53 days; and (4) Between 1993 and 1994, the average number of adjournments per case increased to 2.5 while the average length of adjournments was unchanged at 24 days.
