This document contains transcripts of the first session of the Hearing before the Committee on the Judiciary, US Senate, 101st Congress, on the Control of Foreign Drug Trafficking Activities. The session was held on August 17, 1989.
Abstract
Witnesses at this Hearing included: (1) Stephen M. Duncan, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs and Coordinator of Drug Enforcement Policy and Support; (2) Gen. Alfred M. Gray, Jr., Commandant of the Marine Corps and member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; (3) Max Mermelstein, former drug trafficker; (4) Richard D. Gregorie, former Chief Assistant US Attorney, Miami, FL; (5) Robert W. Merkle, former US Attorney, Tampa, FL; and (6) Dr. Norman A. Bailey, former National Security Council senior staff member. In addition to the testimony and prepared statements of the witnesses, Committee Chairman Biden presented a letter from the Department of State regarding Richard Gregorie's statement about the alleged actions of former Ambassador Otto Reich in connection with plans to capture a Medellin Cartel drug trafficker.
