This publication is based on aggregate data on child abuse and neglect, collected through the Summary Data Component (SDC) of the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS).
Abstract
In 1993, 51 jurisdictions reported that 1,018,692 children in the U.S. were substantiated or indicated victims of maltreatment; 40 percent suffered from neglect, 24 percent from physical abuse, 14 percent from sexual abuse, and 23 percent from other types of maltreatment, including medical neglect and emotional abuse. These child victims represent approximately 15 victims per 1,000 children under the age of 18. While 53 percent of reports of alleged maltreatment originated from professionals, about 20 percent came either from the victim or family members of the victim. This document presents background information on the design of NCANDS, major findings of the analyses of data submitted by the States, and 1993 SDC data tables. 13 figures, 8 notes, and 3 appendixes
