The hypothesis that the increased use, misuse, and abuse of drugs is one of the many explanations for the increase in adolescent suicide and suicide attempts during the last 25 years is examined, based on a review of the literature and an analysis of clinical case histories.
Abstract
The rate of suicidal behavior among youth in the United States represents a major public health problem. The literature suggests that drug abuse may be a form of slow suicide, but eventually the drugs fail to deaden the psychic pain, to fulfill the unmet needs, and to combat the conflicting and confusing feelings and emotions long repressed. Both clinical case histories and research results illustrate the impact of increased drug use as an argument for the upsurge in youth suicide. The analysis concludes the drug prevention programs, along with more effective treatments and referrals for adolescents experiencing alcohol and drug problems, is essential to suicide prevention, intervention, and mental health promotion among youth.
