This article reports on the effectiveness of a halfway house for narcotics addicts committed to the Civil Addict Program of the California Department of Corrections.
Abstract
The program consists of an institutional phase, where all new commitments are sent for at least 6 months, and an outpatient phase to which addicts are released under the supervision of parole officers. The program's goals are to treat the addict and to teach him control so that he does not again become physically addicted or commit crimes. This evaluation was based on a comparison of 44 offenders who were referred to the halfway house for placement but rejected for lack of bed space, and 44 addicts who were released from the institutional phase of the program and placed in the halfway house. Both groups were followed for 1 year following their release from the institutional phase of the Civil Addict Program. The two groups did not differ in terms of satisfactory outpatient status, detected drug use, and new criminal convictions. 4 tables and 13 references
