This article reports the results of a survey of 200 juvenile and adult prostitutes working in the San Francisco Bay Area; the instrument covered, among other issues, the use of drugs and alcohol by child molesters and rapists.
Abstract
Eighty-nine percent of the respondents reported that at least one person in their family used alcohol or other drugs. Drugs and alcohol also played a part in both incidents of rape and juvenile sexual exploitation reported by the respondents. At least 40 percent of the adult respondents reported they had abused drugs before starting their prostitution careers. Many of the prostitutes had been influenced by deviancy among their juvenile peer groups. The frequency of drug use among prostitutes was very high, and 27 percent said they had started prostituting because of drugs. The study also documented a high prevalence of substance abuse among the child molesters and rapists of these subjects. 4 tables and 2 references
