During the study period, 86.9 percent of the approximately 17,800 program admissions were male. The percentage of commitments following a felony conviction steadily increased, until they represented 93 percent of males and 82 percent of females admitted to the program. There was a large number of commitments terminated prior to the full 7 years for reasons other than early release via a successful 2- or 3-year outpatient status provision. Nonetheless, a significant proportion of admissions remained in the program for more than seven years. Correlates of outcome, according to univariate analysis, included race, prior criminal behavior, substance abuse patterns, mental status, and grade placement. 7 tables, 3 figures, and 8 references
