The arrest process in the King's County District Attorney's Office, which presides over Brooklyn, involves couriers, faxes, re-faxing, driving as long as 2 hours round trip to conduct interviews and depositions, and other major expenditures of time and money. To help expedite the arrest process, lessen costs, and maximize patrols, the DA's Office turned to WilTel Communications Systems. Together they found a solution in VISIT Video 2.0, a personal computer-based videoconferencing system from Northern Telecom. The system trial united the DA's Complaint Room with four of the borough's most remote and busiest precincts. The VISIT Video's screen-sharing and file-transfer capabilities allow DA personnel and arresting officers to jointly complete arrest documentation from their separate locations, in a single work session. Based on the success of the VISIT trial, the Borough of Brooklyn plans to outfit all 23 precincts and seven King's County District Attorney's office locations with multiple desktop videoconferencing systems by mid-year 1996.
