Intended as a reference document, this manual explains the rules for using juvenile detention in West Virginia and provides other information to help officials when handling juvenile cases.
Abstract
Individual sections define juvenile detention, list the appropriate and inappropriate reasons to detain juveniles, the risks involved when detention is used inappropriately, and the use of detention standards to protect children and the public. Additional sections summarize the rules regarding arrest and overnight detention, the procedures for secure and nonsecure detention, the handing of intoxicated youths, interrogation, the detention hearing, bond, procedures when a parent is unavailable, detention setting, the duration of detention, and alternatives to detention, and the authority and responsibilities of each agency and type of officials within the juvenile detention system.
