This report summarizes statewide sentencing practices in North Carolina and each of the four Judicial Divisions, based on data regarding 21,776 sentencing episodes; the data were provided by the Information Services Division of the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) to the North Carolina Sentencing and Police Advisory Commission.
Abstract
The statewide data included 99 of the 100 counties in North Carolina. The analysis revealed that 90 percent of all persons convicted of a felony in FY 1992-93 were male. Males accounted for 99 percent or more of the convictions for first- and second-degree rape, other sex offenses, kidnapping, and first-degree burglary. The percentage of females was highest for fraud (50 percent), forgery (32 percent), other property crimes (19 percent), and voluntary manslaughter (18 percent). The average age of all persons convicted of a felony was 28.1 years. Fifty-seven percent of al persons convicted of a felony were black, 36 percent were white, 2 percent were American Indian, and 5 percent were other or unknown. Fifty-two percent of felony crime convictions were either for drug law offenses (34 percent) or breaking and entering (18 percent). Figures and tables
