This manual explains the benefits of fitness for law enforcement and how they can be obtained by using an agency fitness program such as FitForce.
Abstract
The guide addresses two main areas. The first three chapters consider the importance of physical fitness: how fitness is job- related, how it can benefit a police agency, how to define the components of fitness, how to achieve behavioral change, and how fitness programs are being used nationwide. The next three chapters present details on beginning a departmental fitness program. They discuss the legal issues of starting or upgrading a fitness program, the steps in beginning a program, and the role that FitForce can play in making program start-up and maintenance easier. Each chapter begins with a set of chapter objectives and ends with a summary. Most chapters include exercises to help the reader work through the concepts discussed. The chapter that addresses the steps for starting a program includes checklists for tracking the start-up process and space for recording ideas for each step. Overall, FitForce is a comprehensive program that offers training, tests, standards, and a program framework designed specifically for police agencies. It is a behavioral change program that helps officers become fit and stay fit. In FitForce, selected officers are trained in the basics of fitness and in program implementation. 113 references
