These 15 papers present empirical and theoretical perspectives of history, sociology, criminology, psychology, law, and corrections regarding corrections policies and programs in Canada.
Abstract
Individual papers focus on the philosophy and practice of parole, privatization in corrections, and the classification of dangerousness in the Canadian correctional system. Additional papers examine geographical variations in juvenile sentencing, the attitudes and experiences of a youthful murderer incarcerated in a secure custody youth facility in Ontario, the use of detention for Cree offenders in East James Bay courts, and a program to develop vocational skills and assist employment among inmates. Further papers discuss correctional reform, punishment in the 1980's, community-based corrections, shock incarceration, political prisoners in the United States and the implications for Canada, the role of computers and related technology in corrections, and the future of incarceration.
