Annotation
The articles collected here examine the construction of social control as constituting a carceral context, a mythology that perpetuates and justifies the coercive nature of the Canadian criminal justice system.
Abstract
The authors seek to build a theoretical and pedagogical foundation upon which to facilitate discussion of the systemic racism, sexism, homophobia, and ageism inherent in various correctional and policed environments. Some of the specific topics addressed in these articles include community programming for young offenders, individual and structural barriers to the employment of prisoners, community corrections, community-oriented policing, and the unique problems of prisoners' families. These issues are approached from the perspectives of disciplines ranging from sociology and penology to criminology, social work, gerontology, and law. Chapter references
