Abstract
Papers on psychology and operational policing discuss the contribution of psychological theory and research to routine policing activities, including patrol, conflict resolution, traffic law enforcement, crime prevention, interviewing, eyewitness identification, and the detection of guilty knowledge. They also demonstrate how the careful application of psychological principles and techniques can enhance police performance in many of these areas. Papers on psychological and organizational function provide a guide to organizational practice based on comprehensive reviews of research on personnel selection, integrity testing, police training, performance appraisal, supervision and leadership, group functioning and performance, shiftwork, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. It concludes with a discussion of police research, providing insights for evaluating the usefulness of research findings and guidance for researchers considering projects in police settings.
