In January 1994, the North Carolina Crime Prevention Division and the North Carolina Center for the Prevention of Crime in Schools joined with the State's Crime Stoppers Association to launch a Scholastic Crime Stoppers program; to date, programs have been initiated in 25 communities across the State.
Abstract
The program provides a channel for students, parents, and teachers to work cooperatively with law enforcement agencies; provides a safer environment for students while they are at school; and creates a student body that is involved in the well-being of its school and community. The three Scholastic Crime Stoppers models being utilized in North Carolina schools focus on active student involvement under the supervision of a faculty or law enforcement advisor; the promotion of the local Crime Stoppers program within the schools; or the involvement of both a student advisory board and the local Crime Stoppers program. Some of the topics discussed here related to implementation of a school-based program include creation of the school advisory board, role of school resource officers, funding, anonymity, and media coverage.
