This document presents the latest prison population projections for Great Britain, based on updated information and taking into account the estimated effects of policy and legislative changes that will affect the prison population, i.e., the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.
Abstract
The total inmate population in Great Britain is expected to increase to 56,000 by the year 2002, representing an increase of 7,200 from the average population in 1994. The sentenced adult male population is estimated to rise from 29,300 in 1994 to 31,600 in 2002; the population of sentenced male young offenders is projected to increase to 7,000 in 2002 from 5,200 in 1994. Finally, the data indicate that the remand population will increase from 12,400 in 1994 to 15,400 in 2002.
