This report on the main activities and events sponsored by the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) for 1993 outlines the various training programs, research, and other services and activities performed by UNAFEI.
Abstract
UNAFEI conducted one 5-week international seminar (93rd) and two 3-month international training courses (94th and 95th), which were regular training programs conducted at UNAFEI's facilities in Fuchu, Tokyo. The 93rd International Seminar carried the title, "Policy Perspective for Organized Crime Suppression." A report on this seminar is included; it outlines reports on the various topics discussed, including innovative legislation and methods for organized crime suppression, improvement in the efficiency of Law enforcement in combatting organized crime, and enhancement of public participation for the eradication of organized crime and protection of witnesses. The 94th International Training Course was entitled, "Current Problems in Correctional Treatment and Their Solution." Topics addressed prison overcrowding, extent of implementation of the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, current trends in the inmate populations and appropriate treatment, and staff training and development of research. The 95th International Training Course was entitled, "Effective Countermeasures Against Crimes Related to Urbanization and Industrialization." Training topics are also outlined for this course. Proceedings are outlined for international meetings and an overseas joint seminar on "Effective Countermeasures Against Organized Crime." The work program for 1994 is also outlined.
