After reviewing the current crime situation in Malaysia and factors that have contributed to it, this paper describes the role of various agencies in countering crime.
Abstract
Malaysia is experiencing rapid economic development, and this has been attended by an increase in crime as well as new forms of criminality. This paper presents crime and offense statistics that cover the latter half of the 1980's. Data are presented for robbery, rape, murder and attempted murder, burglary, vehicle theft, white-collar crime, drug trafficking, and prostitution. Of particular concern to the police are the criminal activities of organized crime societies. The roles of government agencies in countering crime are briefly described, followed by the identification of areas that need improvement. These include the prison classification system, community-based treatment programs, and court management. Also discussed are juvenile case processing, the frequency of juvenile offenders in new cases, juvenile delinquency factors, and juvenile delinquency prevention measures. 13 tables
