The reality is that one out of two women will be confronted by a sexual predator sometime in their lives; 80 percent of the time, he is known to the victim.
Abstract
Thirty percent of women who are raped by a stranger will report the crime, compared to only 1 percent of victims who have been raped by someone familiar to them. Understanding who the rapist is and how he behaves can assist in suspect interrogation and victim interviews. Further, it is important to realize that all rapists follow a five-step behavior pattern called the "rape sequence." These five steps include target selection, approach, sexual violation, intimidation, and termination. Because acquaintance rape is significantly underreported, heightened awareness and changed attitudes are essential. Law enforcement officers in particular should be sensitive to the victim in the interviewing process and should understand how rapists operate. A profile of the "nice guy" rapist is presented. 7 references
