This publication contains statistics on offenses reported to the police, crimes investigated, recidivism, sanctions, and imprisonments in Norway in 1993.
Abstract
Some 345,000 offenses, including 244,000 crimes and 102,000 misdemeanors, were reported in 1993. The largest category of crimes was larcenies, which accounted for 69 percent of all reported crimes. Crime reports were filed on 169,000 thefts; 68,000 involved simple larceny, 79,000 grand larceny, and 21,000 auto theft. Property damage ranked second, with 16,000 reports filed; and drug-related crimes ranked third, with 14,000 incidents reported. In addition, 11,500 violent crimes were reported, which included 39 cases of murder and 113 cases of attempted murder or grievous bodily harm. A total of 2,243 sex crimes were reported, including 396 rapes, 433 cases of sexual abuse of minors under the age of 14, and 127 cases of incest. Traffic violations composed the largest category of misdemeanors, with 52,000 cases. A total of 8,360 of the traffic violations involved driving under the influence of alcohol. 62 tables and 16 figures
