Abstract:
With the passage last fall of major Federal legislation, the Federal Government is moving in new directions to assist our States and localities to combat crime and violence. The United Nations Congress provides the opportunity to provide cost-effective exchanges of experience, knowledge, and technology and to encourage future cooperation between and among member countries of the United Nations. By maintaining a practical orientation, the countries can ensure a constructive relationship with the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, created in 1991 to set policy and oversee implementation of the United Nations Crime Program. This meeting provides an opportunity for useful international cooperation at a direct level. The United States will be involved in this effort through its presentations on training for law enforcement professionals, its demonstration of the use of advanced information technologies to communicate criminal justice information more efficiently, and its assistance in organizing a workshop on international extradition.
