This review of literature on drug abuse assessment and drug treatment concludes that although not every form of treatment has been demonstrated to be effective with every client, all treatment has some positive effect and that generally, the longer the treatment, the better the outcome.
Abstract
At the same time, all types of treatment have demonstrated substantial reductions in improvement after clients leave treatment. Drug treatment is also an effective adjunct to criminal sanctions, and all drug treatment is cost-effective in terms of crime, drug use, and lack of productivity. The six crucial components of any successful drug abuse treatment program are assessment, programming, linkages, human resources, environment, and accountability. An essential component of any successful drug treatment program is relapse prevention. Successful drug treatment programs include methadone programs, jail-based residential programs, therapeutic communities, case management models, and outpatient drug-free programs. New initiatives likely to affect this field include assessment protocols, new treatment interventions, new program models, and new service delivery systems. 92 references
