This paper reviews the current research on fear of crime among residents of Australia.
Abstract
A number of factors have been associated with fear of crime, in Australia and elsewhere. These include gender, age, income, previous victimization, media exposure, environmental considerations and neighborhood change. Some solutions, which policymakers should consider with caution, include reducing incivility and disorder, implementing street policing schemes, improving police-community relations, organizing neighborhood residents in programs which will enhance their sense of cohesion, developing telecommunications technologies such as caller ID, and modifying certain aspects of the built environment. 9 references
