This report evaluates the first year of operation of Junee Correctional Center in New South Wales.
Abstract
The objective set for Junee was to provides an opportunity for the private sector in New South Wales to prove it can be more cost- effective and innovative in the design, construction, and management of prisons. This study does not focus on the issue of cost-effectiveness, but instead compares Junee to department- operated facilities on a number of factors, and identifies the innovative aspects of Junee's operation. The main differences identified in this first year pertained to the management model of the facility, health services, the multiskilled approach to programs, occupational health and safety, events in custody (i.e., deliberate self-harm, assaults on officers and inmates, fights between inmates), suicide awareness and prevention, inmate profiles, preservice training, and weekly States. 2 tables, 4 charts, 31 notes, 8 references, and 8 appendixes
