This publication explains recent Federal legislation dealing with civil rights, health care, and disability issues pertaining to employment.
Abstract
The first section covers the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), discussing its statutory requirements; regulations; and updated information on the implications of the law for employment practices. The second section examines issues related to the Civil Rights Act of 1991 in terms of jury trials, compensatory and punitive damages, prohibited employment practices, Federal employment discrimination laws, rules against drug use, retroactivity, U.S. Supreme Court rulings, and the law's impact on affirmative action programs. The final section deals with the impact on employers of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, and its interpretive rule.
