Because child sexual abuse is becoming epidemic, child protection guidelines are offered for parents and professionals to help them identify and prevent such abuse.
Abstract
The author covers child sexual abuse indicators, elements of proving child sexual abuse, sex offender punishment, and symptoms displayed by victims. The author also considers child memory, victimizing effects of child sexual abuse, characteristics of sex offenders, the role played by social service departments in protecting children, child testimony in the courtroom, child interviewing, and the criminal justice response to child sexual abuse. Case examples describing both perpetrators and victims of child sexual abuse are included. An appendix contains information on the child sex crime syndrome, a reading list, and a list of resource and referral services. 30 references
