Some obstacles unique to police that must be overcome before the application of a systematic approach to policing becomes possible pertain to the dominant negative police culture attitude toward research and development and traditional ideas about policing training. The Ontario Police College took a systematic approach toward redesigning a refresher course for patrol officers. After reviewing data from interviews, the literature, focus groups, and questionnaires, the Advanced Patrol Training Course incorporated standards created for each identified need. The new course is modular in approach and is comprised of ongoing simulations and student evaluations.
