Over the last decade there has been a significant expansion of addiction research in most of the western European countries. Driven by political interest in drug abuse, more and more funds have become available for research. In some cases this increased interest in drugs has led to more research into alcohol as well. Various mechanisms for coordinating the research have been developed. The data on these research centers have been obtained by various means. Many of the names and addresses were available from the files of the alcohol, drugs, and tobacco unit of the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization. Others have been added through approaching key persons in the various countries. Rather than trying to present a comprehensive picture, this directory aims at listing major research centers. For each center, the information provided contains the name of the center, its address, telephone number, fax number, the name of the director, main research areas, and further details on the center.
