Individual papers focus on theories regarding violence causes and the principles of conflict management and differing views of the causes of the race-related riots that occurred in the 1960's in the United States and the early 1980's in Great Britain. Additional articles present the perspectives of the residents of various British communities regarding how the police might have helped prevent specific disorders and describe recent police policies in London and other European countries that try to address problems in a more constructive way. Further papers focus on the use of conflict resolution and mediation in the United States and Great Britain and examine the implications of the other papers for crisis intervention and violence prevention.
