In 1987, SCDC staff began to redesign OBCIS using Integrated Database Management System (IDMS) software. Today, the department's centralized offender management system supports the following functions: intake processing and assessment, inmate classification and needs assessment, release eligibility screening, inmate disciplinary and grievance tracking, institutional assignment and history, inmate transportation, education and program services tracking, medical reporting, inmate identification, and inmate trust fund and canteen needs. To assist the system's 1,800 users, standards were established to ensure compatibility between 1,200 terminals and printers connected to a high-speed Statewide network. In the future, SCDC will continue to expand the current system by improving connectivity and system integration to enable use of new technology.
